Project Title: Construction of Aleisa Water Treatment Plant and Aleisa Phase 1 Pipeline
Historically, most of Samoa’s water supply, like its population, has been directed towards coastal areas. Now there is more and more demand for reticulated water supplies in higher, inland areas as people move inland in response to cyclones, tsunamis and climate change.
In August 2016, SWA completed Phase 1 of a new treated water supply network to the Aleisa area in the Upolu Island hills to the west of Apia urban area. The pipeline constructed was 6 kilometers long and will supply approximately 2,000 people from the Aleisa Water Treatment Plant which was constructed in 2012.
Between May and December 2017, SWA expects to install a further 20 kilometers of pipeline along the Alafa’alava Road to extend this treated water supply to a further 6,000 people, who in the past only had access to raw water. The upgrade will also serve to replace the very old existing pipelines, improving service in the area.
